Who or what is your musical inspiration?
My mother was my first musical inspiration. She played piano and accordion sang and wrote poems, and I followed in her footsteps. She encouraged me to play violin, which I did for nine years. Prince Rogers Nelson was unafraid and dabbled in all styles and was one of my musical inspirations. There are so many Tina Turner, Mavis Staples, Joyce Kennedy of Mother’s Finest, Heart and Toni Braxton. My associates around me when I started music in Atlanta Georgia.
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
Of course, with all the exposure, it would propel me forward and give me the notoriety I need. But honestly, it would help promote my Domestic violence, sexual violence. Organization called Verbal Purple. Music was made to inspire and heal and that’s what I would use it for.
What would you do with $50,000?
I would fund my organization, Verbal Purple and create events that would support domestic violence and sexual violence, survivors, and victims and organizations that support them. Of course I might buy a couple of pieces of gear for my studio, but my goal is really to be part of the light of the world. Music has gotten me through the worst times of my life.
