Alejo Aybus

I need music to survive. I know wanting to die; I made a 21-song concept album dying in each evolutionary chapter instead. Bowie/Gaga-style.

Q&A

Who or what is your musical inspiration?

Sonically: Radiohead, Billie Eilish, Coldplay, Joji, Florence + the Machine, Nothing But Thieves, No Doubt, The Police, Fleetwood Mac. Dark psychedelic confessional stratosphere artists with a rock edge. Aesthetically: Prince, Elton John, Amy Winehouse, Doja Cat, Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson, Chappell Roan, Lil Nas X. Provocateurs who flip scripts. Internally: John Mayer, Sara Bareilles, Steely Dan, Post Malone, Harry Connick, Jr., Ramin Djawadi. Cinematic moodmasters with smoky full hearts.

How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?

The Global Citizen Festival would give my work the spectacle it deserves. The vision for the project is maximalist showmanship: caveman costumes, pyramids, wings on demigods, dancers dressed as fae. I can (and honestly, have to) scale down for intimate and budgetless performances, but imagining the production quality that could come from this partnership has me giddy & inspired. I want to be seen; there’s so much to say, do, be! If even 10 hear my songs and connect to the art its a win

What would you do with $50,000?

I survived an S.A. situation a few years back that interrupted my Plan A (IU Musical Theatre BFA). I would first take care of the acad./med. debt that holds me back from pursuing music with my whole breath. With the remaining ~30k I would build out the footwork of the legacy I wish for, including the startup of programs for Queer adult theatre, Trans housing, nonpunitive rape survivors, & culture for kids of assimilation. Maybe MiMu Gloves/Lumatone, to unlock new soundscapes for storytelling
