Who will perform at the Global Citizen Festival, appear in Rolling Stone, and take home $50,000?
Who or what is your musical inspiration?
We are inspired by the samba reggae movement, a music born out of Black resistance in Salvador, Bahia Brazil by Neguinho do Samba, and meant to empower and uplift the people. Our founder Giba Gonçalves was part of Ile Aiye, Olodum, Muzenza and Tupi Nago as a dancer and percussionist, and he has grown Batalá worldwide. Many incredible women in percussion including Viviam Caroline, Sheila E., Dandha Da Hora, Melissa Hie inspire us in a traditionally male-dominated field.
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
Performing at the Global Citizen Festival would be instrumental not only to our efforts to take our group to the next level, but you would also be supporting a band driven and directed by women and highlighting the beauty of what a multigenerational, multicultural group can do together.
What would you do with $50,000?
We would like to be able to connect with the roots of the music by taking 10 of our most dedicated players to Brazil to train locally with masterful musicians and dancers and have the opportunity to connect with bandmates from other partner bands around the world. We would also love to have the opportunity to record some of our newest compositions for the first time ever at our home base in Bahia.
