Who or what is your musical inspiration?
Inspiration comes from the golden age of music with a message, when artists like The Clash and U2 wrote songs expressing the human condition while pointing the finger at social and political injustice, songs to be sung in big spaces. Peter Gabriel sang Biko and we all joined along. Through eras of Indie, Hip Hop, EDM etc., the message remained, but now surrounded by urgent beats, new sounds and cutting lyrics of scenes that, while not my own, rang TRUE. All of this is part of my mood board.
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
The proverbial big break, a performance at the GCF would be a huge lift in exposing my songs to listeners beyond the small clubs and the narrow social and streaming algorithms. Here, we will connect LIVE with an audience that may be looking for a message of hope during tenuous times, something to sing along to, without tricks or gimmicks, and on which to build some momentum for change. Our voice is our weapon. Come along.
What would you do with $50,000?
I will donate half to the ACLU to continue fighting for due process and our civil liberties in this turbulent time, and half to immigrant rights organizations to assist people targeted by our current government.
