Who or what is your musical inspiration?
I love the rockers and protest singers - Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, Elton John, Sinead O'Connor, The Hives, Nirvana... Stylistically I'm influenced by Florence Welch and Lana Del Rey. But what gets me off the couch and onto the mic is knowing that the role of recruiting citizens to the cause of community falls almost uniquely to musicians who have something to say. What I have to say about hope and community building isn't in the zeitgeist and needs to be.
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
Performing at Global Citizen would be my big break. A festival about creating community through art and action is the perfect platform for an activist musician like me to sing my message of resilience, resistance, resourcefulness, and community building, especially at this moment in human history, when we have no choice but to create our own hope and meaning. But we can, and I can't wait to elaborate through my performance.
What would you do with $50,000?
$50,000 would pay for the development, production, and release of my debut album, exploring the ideals and practices I believe in. It would also fund at least a year's worth of band practice. I'd be able to pay my band to rehearse regularly and fine-tune our live set, so that we become a force to be reckoned with.
