Who or what is your musical inspiration?
Christie Aida & the Free Press' inspiration include deep cuts by NOLA soul superstar Irma Thomas, Filipina singers such as Pilita Corrales, and San Francisco bred powerhouses such as Sugar Pie de Santo. Our City, San Francisco, spurs our creativity. Originals are often are informed by our sensitivity and advocacy for community organizing, social justice, and housing as a human right. Our friends' stories and struggles in the Tenderloin's Cadillac Hotel galvanize us.
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
As a social justice artist and affordable housing builder, performing at the festival would be a significant opportunity to amplify awareness for non-profit organizations dedicated to building affordable housing and serving very low-income communities. I am particularly passionate about promoting and augmenting the Cadillac Hotel's free monthly music concerts for my friends who can't afford to buy concert tickets.
What would you do with $50,000?
I would offer a contribution of $30,000.00 to the Cadillac Hotel in SF. My intention for this donation is to enhance social services, specifically the free monthly music concert program. These funds could be used to pay volunteer musicians, and replace the archaic existing audio/video equipment to further enrich these musical events. In addition to this, I plan to allocate the remainder towards a new musical project focused on the stories of the residents at the Cadillac Hotel.
