Who or what is your musical inspiration?
My musical inspiration is the madness you feel when music carries you away. I write songs about last minute adventures, living in trap houses, and losing love. I grew up in a songwriting culture and spent a lot of time on the road, hitchhiking and learning about the world from the sidewalk up. My voice is strong (I get compared to Judy Garland and Shakira) and my vibe is like Lola Young meets Tom Waits. I’m both old and new and I’m endless. My tunes are catchy and they stay with you.
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
Performing at the Global Citizen Festival would not only change my career, it would change my life. I’m breaking into markets across Canada, I’m doing well on the radio and I’m incrementally building tours, but playing a festival of that size would put my music in front of so many new faces! I’m more than ready to take on the big stage and share my voice- and I’m excited to support an organization that is so passionate about helping people who are without homes. My
What would you do with $50,000?
I would perfect my next album and I would launch a tour to share it. It’s going to be about the power of my grandmothers and the impossibility of existing in a body that is so consistently disregarded and disrespected in this world. My last album connected with people because I talked about real rage and real desperation- and I want to connect with people more, so they don’t feel alone. I’m on CBC radio on regular rotation now.
