Who or what is your musical inspiration?
I feel blessed to have grown up surrounded by music ... shaped by the records my parents played; legends like Fela, Aretha, Grover Washington Jr, Sam Cooke, Santana, Stevie, and all the greats of the ’60s and ’70s. The late ’70s brought DJs who changed my life: Larry Patterson, Larry Levan, Hippie Torrales, Francois K, Tee Scott, Timmy Regisford, Naeem Johnson, and more. Music raised me. Music moves me.
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
To perform at Global Citizen would be the honor of a lifetime. After decades of community-building, organizing, and sharing music that uplifts souls, this moment would mean being seen … not just as an artist, but as a vessel for change. It would be a chance to bring the sound of my journey, my people, and my purpose to a world stage. It would move my career, and my mission forward in ways I’ve long dreamed of.
What would you do with $50,000?
I’d use the $50,000 to deepen the impact of my work supporting intergenerational dance events, mentoring emerging DJs, and creating safe, joyful spaces for all. I’d also support the development of my documentary Movement, which tells the story of how we helped repeal NYC’s Cabaret Law. This $50K would fuel the next chapter of purpose-driven creativity.
