Who or what is your musical inspiration?
My inspiration stems from my Ethiopian American roots and DMV upbringing. Raised on hip-hop and R&B, I scoured Limewire for Destiny’s Child’s soulful harmonies, vibing to go-go’s raw pulse. My Ethiopian heritage, infused with jazz’s improvisational spirit, sparked my love for the music’s emotional depth. Discovering Amapiano in my 20s, I heard ethiojazz echo in Kelvin Momo’s soulful chords, Busta 929’s rhythmic drive, and Thakzin’s melodic laye
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
This would ignite my career as DJ Milu, an Ethiopian American DJ spinning AfroHouse and Amapiano. With access to all attendees and millions streaming, my sets—fusing hip-hop roots, Ethiopian jazz vibes, and Amapiano soul—would captivate global fans, bypassing club gigs securing festival bookings and playlist features. Amplifying my mission to spread African dance music’s pulse worldwide, inspiring connection and cultural impact.
What would you do with $50,000?
It’ll boost DJ Milu’s global Amapiano and AfroHouse impact. I’d first travel to South Africa, studying Amapiano’s and AfroHouse deep rooted history. Later collaborating with local producers to create first soulful EP, streamed on major platforms for worldwide reach while also discovering my own sound. I’d host pop-ups in the DC area, live-streamed on YouTube to build a massive fanbase. I’d launch social marketing campaigns to boost global visibility, and donat
