Who or what is your musical inspiration?
The ability of so many people, especially in my hometown of Milwaukee, to transcend so many tough circumstances, is constantly inspiring. A lot of my musical inspiration comes from Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Bob Marley and the Wailers, the Clash, Black Uhuru, Public Enemy, Bobby Dylan, Bruce and the E Street boys, Paul Weller, Barry White, Aretha Franklin, OutKast, Lizzo, Milwaukee's own Paul Cebar, and my all-time favorite pianist, my mom. Among many others.
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
Any chance to share a musical message of radical optimism is an honor -- the more, the merrier!
What would you do with $50,000?
I'd donate $5,000 to Giannis Antetokounmpo's homeless shelter here in Milwaukee, $5,000 to Sojourner Family Peace Center (also here in Milwaukee), and $5,000 to the ACLU. Then I'd mix, master, and release a whole mess of good new jams.
