Who or what is your musical inspiration?
I'm drawn to the overlap and interplay of music and poetry in artists like Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, Joni Mitchell, Florence Welch, and Fiona Apple. I'm a bit of a sonic omnivore, but specifically inspired by the vocal theatrics of golden-age Arabic Tarab music, the adventurousness of early minimalists, and the stoic performativity of Beth Gibbons.
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
Sometimes the conceptual work behind my writing primes people to imagine that the music will sound inaccessible, when my concern has always been to couch my work inside bangers. After fronting a band for a long time, playing the festival will be an opportunity to showcase my solo songwriting in an environment that allows people to appreciate the songs themselves rather than the curatorial statements that tend to accompany them.
What would you do with $50,000?
Record the album and fairly remunerate my collaborators.
