Who or what is your musical inspiration?
I grew up with older siblings who often listened to Bread, the Guess Who, Merle Haggard, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and everyone in between. Although I gravitate toward singer-songwriters, from Neil Young, Cat Stevens and Carole King to Amy Grant and Rich Mullins, having been around such a variety of music, I believe, has helped me as a writer. I often become bored writing in the same genre day in and day out and like to change things up a bit while continually trying to learn something new.
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
You never know how you'll be received, so it won't impact whether I continue to write as that is part of who I am. But it would enable me to share my work on a much larger scale, expand my horizons and connect with a world of people I might not otherwise have the opportunity to reach.
What would you do with $50,000?
Make more music! I'm also involved in various projects: My music royalties & earnings provide sponsorships to Native American youth; I serve as director of a nonprofit organization that sponsors free concerts & other events for cancer patients, survivors & their loved ones; I organize, oversee & perform at suicide awareness events. I would use what I could to continue these efforts while also enjoying the chance to help other musicians get their songs "out there".
