Who or what is your musical inspiration?
My music is inspired by the world around me. I write music from my perspective and feelings, as well as from a place of compassion and empathy for the world around me. Nothing is off limits. As for artists, I’m inspired by true vocalists — Whitney Houston, D’Angelo, Jazmine Sullivan…just to name a few. A lot of newer artists also feed the fire, who doesn’t love Doechii!
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
Genres like neo-soul don’t really occupy larger stages unless blended with a more popular genre like contemporary R&B. Performing at the Global Citizen Festival would allow me to bring this sound and message to listeners and aspiring artists. Additionally, I’d love the opportunity to open for phenomenal artists in a new market.
What would you do with $50,000?
I would focus on a solid launch for my debut album. My creative process has historically been insulated, with me doing everything from writing to registrations. The $50,000 prize would enable me to work with one producer and videographer to complete my visual album. I’d like to fund the project in a manner that allows me to focus on being an artist.
