Who or what is your musical inspiration?
At the core, my musical inspirations are my people. The voice is the only instrument that is DNA and has been carried by my mother, grandmother and those before them. Because of this, I always channel their stories into my own and to those yet to come. I am also very inspired by people I have met along the way, in South Africa, America and from all over the world. From listening to the lilt of their languages, to the passion of their idioms and sway of their bodies - my artistry unfolds.
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
My name means "Star" in sesotho, my home language. I think of this opportunity as a moment to shine a light on things I am extremely passionate about, music, development and women. It would be extremely impactful as it would expose my music to a wide audience of people who are aligned with these goals to use music as a platform for advocacy, storytelling and inspiring call to action. It would also give me a platform to grow my fanbase and expose me to new avenues of career growth.
What would you do with $50,000?
The first thing I would do is ensure I have a sense of financial for at least 6 months so I can focus solely on writing, recording and performing new music. I am currently working on a project about loneliness in a world full of lonely people. I would use the money to record the album, make digital content and build a team that will help me push the music. A bulk of the money would be spent to create a short film to support the project that highlights stories of aloneness across the world.
