Who or what is your musical inspiration?
I write some songs for the club, some songs for crying in the club and some songs for skipping the club. All my favorite music has one thing in common: they make that world real. There's a sacred geometry in music that will never cease to awe and humble me. I am fascinated by prosody, the way our music taste is a reflection of our lived experience and psychology. My favorite artists are the ones who organize sound to convince you of a reality that feels so real you experience it with them.
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
I've worked at this really hard since I was six-years old. I went to Duke Ellington School of the Arts, a public arts high school in Washington D.C., for Classical and Jazz guitar. I am used to practicing for hours to get it right. I left college to do this. It has not been easy but at the end of the day, this is all I want to do and getting a chance to meet other artists who are trying to do the same thing on a worldwide stage would be life-changing and beyond my wildest dreams.
What would you do with $50,000?
All the music I've recorded has been by myself in my bedroom. This money would be a game-changer in that I could finally be able to afford to go to a studio and work with professional producers and engineers who could take my music to the next level. And you know, pay for rent, plus I just recently realized I really want a slow-cooker.
