Who or what is your musical inspiration?
Music inspires me because it can change the world. As a universal language, it brings us all together.
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
In Iran, where my family is from, it is currently illegal for women to sing and dance in public. I was born in the states, but I worked hard to make a name for myself in the Iranian community so that I could be a voice for these women as an American citizen (since I was privileged to be born in the country and get to enjoy many freedoms). If I can reach a larger audience in the western market, it will bring more awareness to the current situation in and outside of Iran for Iranian women.
What would you do with $50,000?
Honestly, I’m pretty content as of this moment making a living as an independent artist. I even have extra set aside to donate when I can. This really isn’t about the money for me. But the extra money would really help me push my label even further. I started a company called Zan Music (‘Zan’ means woman in Farsi) with the hopes that I could help other female artists pursue an independent career in music to have the same success that I did.
