Who or what is your musical inspiration?
Bill Withers: children the globe over still sing and know his songs and hardly anyone that isn't a musician knows his name. He was all about giving joy through the art of songs with a personal message with a universal appeal to them. That's what I want to be able to do: create music that brings people together for a common good in only the way well-written songs can.
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
I grew up in the middle of nowhere and although I live in LA one of my biggest weaknesses is lack of a community of creatives or a platform for my music. Positivity doesn't always play the best on social media unless it's gimmicky. I want to spread good things and collect a coalition of people tired of the status quo of cynicism, pessimism, who have imaginations big enough to think about even something as simple as music as a way for us to celebrate our differences, not look past them.
What would you do with $50,000?
Start a charity for children living in food insecurity. I worked for a food bank in Minneapolis when I lived there and I always wanted to be able to hire my musician friends to play family-friendly fundraisers where we create awareness around the abysmal rates of child poverty and hunger. We create community-centered events full of music, games, raffles, arcades, and prizes, all while creating awareness and raising money to lift children and their families out of dire circumstances.
