I try my best to play and compose with honesty, beauty and joy. I think my music has potential to heal & inspire genuine curiousity.
Thank you for generously supporting Jarien Jamanila in this year's competition. Your participation allows us to empower Global Citizen in their mission to eradicate extreme poverty and create a world where everyone has an equal chance to thrive.
Who or what is your musical inspiration?
God is the source of all my inspiration. Some of my jazz musical influences include Sarah Vaughan, Thelonious Monk and Eric Dolphy. I’ve recently been enjoying listening to gospel artists lile Marvin Sapp and Kim Burrell. I mainly grew up listening to a lot of classic Hip Hop and R&B. Somebody I really love to hear today is Summer Walker. But my artistic expression comes out most naturally in jazz music.
How would performing at the Global Citizen Festival impact your career?
It would be an honor to bring jazz music to a crowd that numerous. I think it would be an honest introduction of the genre to fresh ears. Playing jazz music is one of the rawest forms of music that influenced all the popular music we hear today. It’d be invaluable to share at this festival, so people can hear jazz in a modern context. The heart of my music includes a lot of blues, swing and improvisation. I think people would appreciate and relate to the novelty in my music.
What would you do with $50,000?
I would do a few things - record a second album of my original compositions. My first album “Jarien Plays Jamanila” is a clear portrait of who I am as a person and artist, so I would like to develop off of that. I would gift some to the communities that mean the most to me like the church and my family. Lastly, I would use it to pay my rent.
